Created for the International Exhibition of Eastern France in Nancy in 1909, the Pierreries decanter bears witness to the expertise of Baccarat artisans in the art of rich cutting. Through the repetition of its geometric motifs and its refined form, it foreshadows the emerging codes of Art Deco. Also known as Flers, it reveals a conical silhouette, 45,6 centimeters high and 11 centimeters in diameter, crafted in double cased crystal, whose balance relies on the steady, powerful breath of the master glassblowers. Emerging from the “hot” workshops in a deep green hue, it gradually reveals its full radiance through the cutting process. Under the cutter’s hand, the emerald crystal layer slowly recedes, allowing the clear crystal to appear. Using a multitude of grinding wheels, each incision engages the material with irreversible precision. The decanter is then adorned with wide bands cut in diamond “pierreries”, unveiling a constellation of colored octagons that refract light with striking intensity
